🔍 Search & Add Foods
Type any food in Smart Food Search — it searches 400K+ USDA foods and 4M branded products. Select the correct match, pick your portion size, then click Add. The food appears in the text box with its FDC ID for instant matching. Add multiple foods separated by commas for a complete meal.
📊 Understanding Your Results
Nutrient Table: Shows each nutrient, your RDI (Recommended Daily Intake), how much you consumed, and your deficiency risk percentage. Green = on target, Orange = watch, Red = high risk.
Nutri-Score (A-E): European food quality grade. A is best, E is worst. Based on calories, sugar, saturated fat, sodium vs. protein, fiber, fruits/vegetables.
NOVA (1-4): Food processing level. 1 = unprocessed (whole fruit), 4 = ultra-processed (Cheetos). Higher NOVA = more chemical additives.
PRAL Score: Acid/alkaline load on your body. Positive = acidic (meat, grains), Negative = alkaline (vegetables, fruits). Chronic acidic diets stress kidneys and bones.

☠️ Hazardous & Additive Warnings
The calculator scans ingredient lists from branded products for chemicals linked to health risks. Red warnings = banned in other countries but legal in the US. Orange warnings = known health concerns. Each warning shows what it is, why it's harmful, and where it's banned. Check the Chemical Encyclopedia for full details.
🧠 Fluoride from Food
Tea, coffee, wine, soda, and foods cooked in water (rice, pasta, soup) contain fluoride. The calculator estimates exposure using published research values. This is separate from your tap water fluoride — it tracks what's in the food itself.
💾 Save to Diary
Click "Save This Meal" to log it in your Food Diary with all nutrients, hazardous warnings, additives, and fluoride data. Everything flows to Trends for long-term tracking. Name your meal and pick the meal type (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack).
💡 Pro Tips
• Use Smart Food Search instead of typing — it's faster and more accurate because it passes the FDC ID directly.
• Search branded products by name (e.g., "Cheetos Hot") to get ingredient-level hazardous scanning.
• The more specific your search, the better the match. "Salmon Atlantic raw" beats "salmon".
• Recipe suggestions appear for any nutrient you're deficient in — click them to see ingredients and instructions.
